Earn-a-Bike

Students ages 9 to 17 learn bicycle repair over eight class sessions, then swap hours of community repair for their own recycled cycle. It takes 24 hours of "Earn-a-Bike time" outside of class to earn a bike.

In this hands-on environment, kids explore a new world of learning outside of school. They give back to the community by repairing used bikes for others, accumulating Earn-a-Bike hours at the same time. Adult mentors provide guidance, friendship, and a strong hand to loosen bolts.

For many of our students, Earn-a-Bike is the only way they can afford to get a bike. We teach 120 students a year, and half those go on to complete 24 hours in Earn-a-Bike and ride off into the sunset on a new bike, with a new helmet and lock. Others spend their time keeping their own bike in repair. Classes start quarterly throughout the year.
